Short Excerpts from Living Your Destiny

The Nature of Reality

You, as consciousness, spend some time on this world, but you evolve on many, many other worlds. You don’t remember these experiences when you are enmeshed in a world, but between worlds you do. You are far vaster than you realize, but that is part of the game—you forget who you are. You forget you are Consciousness, Awareness, Peace, Love, and the creator of it all. You forget so that you can have experience. Someday you will remember.

You were designed for your life, for the life you are having right nownot some other life or some other experience. You were designed for this one. No one else is having or can have the experiences you are having. You are unique, and the experiences you are having are unique because this exact moment and these circumstances will never come again. Everyone is designed to bring the Source experienceunique experience. The Source is not as concerned about the content of that experience as it is about having an experience it never has had before. I loves having experience!

The key to loving life is accepting it. Life will never be exactly this way again, and you love that—you love this moment as it is because that is all there is to love, because it can’t be different than the way it is, and because it will never be repeated. That’s why the Heart loves, not because it loves pain and suffering, but because it’s willing to allow pain and suffering to be there when that’s what is showing up.

Your mind is programmed with conditioning that is unique to you, which ensures that the Source has a unique experience through each of you. Your conditioning is made up of beliefs, opinions, hopes, dreams, judgments, desires, fears, and other ideas designed to bring you certain experiences and lessons. When you are identified with the ego, you take these ideas seriously and make life choices based on them. These ideas are what drive the drama that you call your life. Your story unfolds as you follow one idea after another.

Something else is also driving that drama, and that is essence. It’s co-creating this drama with the ego, and it has certain intentions for your life. Like the ego, essence also drives you toward certain activities. The difference is that these are likely to bring you more fulfillment and happiness than activities driven by the ego because essence drives you to create the life you were meant to live.

This goodness that you are has a plan for you to bring goodness to the world, to save it from the suffering and enslavement of the egoic state of consciousness. As you evolve, you wake up out of ego-identification and begin to live more in alignment with your innate goodness. This goodness reaches out to help others, and how you help them depends on the talents you developed in all of your lifetimes, as you were evolving out of ego-consciousness. These lifetimes of immersion in the egoic state of consciousness develop your talents, wisdom, and character and prepare you to serve others in your later lifetimes from a place of love—from essence.

You discover that happiness doesn’t come from controlling life or from getting what you want but from being who you really are and allowing life to have its way with you. You discover that life’s way is actually your way because there’s really no one else here but you. You have designed this journey for yourself, and you designed the ego to do what it does as well. So, none of it has been a mistake, and it all eventually takes you Home to your Self.

Finding Your Life Purpose

Essence has an intention for this life, and it leads you to it in various ways. It doesn’t leave you without clues. It has many ways of showing you what its intentions are. One of the main ways is through opportunities. Where are the opportunities in your life? What is already easefully happening? What is happening? This is actually the biggest clue to what is being offered and allowed in this lifetime. If it’s happening, then essence is allowing it to happen. Even if it’s not aligned with your life purpose, if it’s happening, then it’s serving some purpose, if not only to show you what doesn’t work for you.

If you want to know what your life purpose is, look at your talents because your life purpose is going to use these strengths and build upon them. What do you love to do and what are you good at? These are the questions that point to your life purpose, and you are the only one who knows the answers because only you know what you love.

You don’t have to rely only on yourself to find what is meaningful for you. Essence is constantly bringing you information from other people and other sources that points you in the direction of your greatest fulfillment. Sometimes it just points to the next step that will take you to the next step, and so on. So, where these opportunities are going isn’t always obvious, but in time it becomes obvious. You begin to see how truly meaningful even small things are in the unfolding of your life.

The most common way you are led to your life purpose is through feelings of joy, elation, excitement, and happiness. Just as the opposite feelings are signs that you are going in the wrong direction, feelings of joy and happiness are signs that you are going in the right direction. This is a simple guidance system you have been given to not only help you find and fulfill your life purpose but evolve you and bring you back Home. Through these feelings, essence speaks to you and draws you back Home to it. It encourages you with these good feelings to do what is right, to act with love, compassion, patience, and integrity. These feelings are reflective of the goodness that is your true nature, and they feel good too. They are proof that at its core, life is good and leading to greater goodness and love.

Identifying the Life Purpose

The circumstances you find yourself in are no mistake, and the circumstances you are drawn to create are not a mistake either. They usually serve your life purpose, and looking at your life from this perspective can help you understand what that purpose is.

Often in retrospect, the life purpose becomes clear, once you see what a particular experience has reaped. How has it changed you? That might be the purpose of the experience and your life purpose. Because so many life purposes are difficult to recognize, certain questions like this one may help you uncover it. Rather than looking at the activities in your life, look at the results of your experiences, and you may find the meaning of those experiences and your life purpose.

Intense experiences in previous lifetimes and the current one nearly always both fuel and potentially interfere with the life purpose. They shape you and make you what you are today. Intense experiences from past lives or in the current one can’t help but have an impact on what you choose to do in this lifetime and, consequently, on your life purpose. Unfortunately, there is often some residue from them, even after much healing, which can interfere with fulfilling your life purpose or fulfilling it more easily.

The socioeconomic standing of the family is often a shaper of the life purpose. A family’s financial situation largely determines what opportunities are available. A lack of finances limits opportunities, and abundant finances provide abundant opportunities. Although it may seem odd, limitation is often exactly what is needed to drive certain life purposes. For example, the limitation of being a racial minority has driven many to work hard and fight to unburden themselves and others of prejudice and oppression. Limitation is often used to fuel the life purpose.

Those whose life purpose is to liberate people from oppression invariably grow up in oppressed circumstances themselves. The same is true of other types of difficulties: Those whose life purpose is to liberate or heal others from drug or alcohol addiction, poverty, handicaps, health problems, and other sorts of limitations invariably suffer these same difficulties before overcoming them themselves. Their own liberation or healing gives them the skills and motivation to help others do the same. This story is played out again and again in life. There are no victims, only opportunities for growth. Any experience can be turned into good, and those who know how to do this are often meant to help the rest discover this.

The Unfolding of the Life Purpose

Whatever your life purpose is, you are offered opportunities that nurture and support it. This is often considered good luck, but everyone has “luck” in some area. Whatever your life purpose is, a certain amount of seeming good luck will point to it.

To do your life purpose with the greatest fulfillment, you need to align with essence rather than the ego at every step of the way. The ego will try to lead you, as it always does, especially during those times when essence hasn’t revealed the next step. To live from essence requires making peace with not knowing. With essence, you don’t know what to do or say or what will unfold until you do. This is extremely uncomfortable for the ego, so it decides to do or say something. It even tries to decide what will happen.

Even people who are very talented don’t necessarily have an easy time fulfilling their life purpose. Life isn’t easy, in case you haven’t noticed. The ego fantasizes that one day this will change, but even when you are aligned with essence and joyfully doing your life purpose, it isn’t always easy. It’s a good thing that ease is not the measure of happiness because when you are aligned with essence and doing your life purpose and facing some difficulties or challenges, you can still be happy. For essence, to be happy, it’s enough to just be alive. Nothing else is needed, not ease or success, but just simply doing what you came here to do, no matter what that entails.

Following Your Heart

The egoic mind takes you out of the present moment, where essence can be experienced and where essence’s communications are received. It draws you into its unreal world, then it pretends to be wise enough to guide you. If you listen to it, your actions will be in response to what it says, and you will have the experiences it designs for you. If you don’t, the opportunity exists for your actions to follow from something else deeper and truer. But you probably won’t discover what that is if you remain caught in the spell of the egoic mind.

There’s another way to live than from the egoic mind, and that is from the Heart, from the aspect of yourself that knows the Divine, that knows your oneness. You begin to give your attention to the Truth rather than to the egoic mind, and that’s a monumental shift in consciousness and in your experience of life. This is perhaps the biggest step you have ever taken in your evolution, as you begin to wake up out of the egoic state of consciousness and into the experience of your true self. Once you take this step, you can never really go back to believing the egoic mind, and that’s what is so revolutionary about this. What will you believe in then? What will guide your life, if not the mind?

What will guide your life is the same thing that has been guiding, or trying to guide, your life throughout your many lifetimes. Your deepest self—essence—has always been available and guiding you as much as you (while identified with the egoic mind) have allowed it to. Now, with less attachment to the mind, it stands a much greater chance of shaping your life according to its intentions. It has always had intentions for your life, but it allowed you to follow your egoic mind and its desires and goals and learn from those choices for as long as you chose to. When you stop allowing your mind and feelings to determine your actions and responses to life, something else steps in and unfolds your life according to its intentions.

The Heart drives you toward what it intends for you with feelings of inspiration, excitement, and joy. It drives you with longings, rather than desires, which take you in a general direction rather than toward a specific goal. Longings, like a magnet, pull you in a certain direction, and you don’t really know why or what the outcome of that direction will be. Desires, on the other hand, are born from the idea of obtaining a specific outcome. The egoic mind plans specifically how this outcome will be achieved, while the Heart leaves you in the mysterious Unknown. You don’t know what the Heart will have you do next to fulfill its intentions. You don’t know until the urge to do something arises, then you do it, and you are left in the mysterious Unknown once again.

You listen to the Heart with something other than your ears. You listen with your awareness. What are you aware of now? You listen for (pay attention to) what is present now and arising now in the moment. You give your attention to what is, which may include a thought, but you don’t give your attention away to that thought. You notice it and then you notice what else is present. The Heart will communicate to you in this moment. What it has to say will be already present in the moment or arising in the moment. If you are busy thinking, you will miss its subtle, nonverbal communication because your attention will be elsewhere.

Blocks to the Life Purpose

Negative conditioning interferes with the life purpose because it keeps you identified with the egoic mind, which doesn’t know the purpose of your life but has its own agenda. For this reason, negative conditioning is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to happiness and fulfillment. If you are busy paying attention to the mind’s false beliefs and fears, your life will be about fixing the so-called problems related to those thoughts and trying to fend off what you fear. This is, in fact, what structures most people’s lives.

Fortunately, it’s not necessary to overcome your negative conditioning completely because that would be very difficult and something few ever accomplish. It’s only necessary to spend some time tuned into the deeper part of you that drives and guides your life toward happiness, fulfillment, and love. You don’t have to be completely dis-identified with the egoic mind to be happy and fulfilled, only enough to catch the messages that your deeper self—essence—is sending you. If you are willing to follow these messages, you can be happy and fulfilled even if you are entrenched in ego-consciousness much of the time. This is, in fact, the situation many are in.

Essence

From essence, there’s a sense that life is unfolding perfectly, naturally, and easily. Everything is just as it should be, and nothing needs to be different. There’s an appreciation that this moment is always changing into something else and won’t be this way for long, so you might as well enjoy it or at least accept it for now. From this quiet place of contentment, urges to do or say things arise, and these actions unfold your life in ways that are meaningful to your life purpose. In the quiet spaces in between your thoughts (the thoughts of the egoic mind), life is unfolding perfectly, and it’s doing this through urges, drives, attractions, repulsions, and other indications of the direction essence intends for you.

Essence draws you to your life purpose, step by step, and you don’t know where these steps are leading or even if they are steps in the right direction. You are meant to be left in the dark somewhat because life is a mystery. You never know what’s going to happen, and this is how it’s meant to be. Not knowing how things will turn out allows you (and the Source) to really experience life.

Reviews

“I wholeheartedly recommend Living Your Destiny! It's one of the most practical spiritual books I have ever read and its principles are so easy to apply to everyday life. The fact that it is a quick, straight forward read does not in anyway diminish its profundity. It really takes the conversation about life purpose to a new level and places it in a broader evolutionary context. Its message is so uplifting, reassuring us that we all have a purpose and that following our heart is always worth it, and then it provides concrete suggestions to help us see whether we are on track. It answered so many of the questions I had about the purpose of my life and the purpose of all life, for that matter.” –Laura Prue
